A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story is a 2006 biography made-for-tv movie
directed by award-winning director Agnieszka Holland and aired on Lifetime
Television.

The story documents the real life of Gwen Araujo, born Edward Araujo, Jr.,
a transgender teenager who was murdered after it was discovered that she
was biologically male.

SUMMARY:

Based on a true story. As a young boy, Eddie Araujo always felt different
somehow. She started putting on her mom's makeup and wearing her mom's
clothes, which her mom found odd.

By the time she entered her teen years, Eddie could no longer hide the fact
that she was a lot different, that she was meant to be female and not male.

When she finally accepted it and with her mom's eventual support, Eddie
changed her name to Gwen and started to live life as female until a tragic
night changed everything.

In this movie, Gwen Araujo was born Eddie Araujo. But as she got older she
started seeing that she was more of a female then a male. So she changed
her name to Gwen when she was in high school and she was no longer a male.

When she was 17 years old she was killed by 3 teenage boys after they
discovered she was a male.

They beat her for 5 hours before tying her up and throwing her in a grave.

Two of the boys were convicted of second- degree murder, and one boy plead
out to manslaughter.

The judge and jury did not see this as a hate crime and none of the boys
were convicted of one.

VIEWER COMMENT:

Author: coloradokid719 from Colorado Springs

I thought this was one of the most thought-provoking and powerful films
I've ever seen based on this subject. When I read about this story awhile
back, I was galled by what happened to her.

J.D. Pardo and Mercedes Ruehl certainly shine in their performances. This
should have been made as a major motion picture, and not relegated to being
a made-for-TV movie. That being said, however,

I salute Lifetime for being brave enough to produce it! It reminds me of
another brave film, called "Soldier's Girl" from 2003, also a made-for-TV
movie, which was also extremely well-done. A standing ovation for everyone
involved in both of these productions!

Sylvia Guerrero: You're not going to your sister's wedding looking
		 like a call girl.

Eddie: You're just mad because you are too old to wear it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sylvia Guerrero: [speaking to Eddie and Chita] You know what time I
got up this morning? 4:30. I bet you didn't know that.
I made the breakfast, did a laundry, I packed three
lunches, I payed the bills and then I went to work.
                 And do you know why?

[grabs Chita]

Sylvia Guerrero: Could I have your attention?

[grabs Eddie]

Sylvia Guerrero: Could I hve your attention?
		 Do you know why?
Because this life, is, exactly what you make it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chita Araujo - Age 17: It's ok if you're a fag.

Eddie: I'm not a fag.

Chita Araujo - Age 17: Just don't flaunt it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sylvia Guerrero: All that work to get you into a new school where kids
wouldn't make fun of you. I just don't get it. Will
		 you talk to me?

Eddie: You don't wanna talk.

Sylvia Guerrero: I'm asking...

	[Eddie interrupts]

Eddie: But you don't. I see you working so hard to make us like,
	everybody else.

Sylvia Guerrero: No to make you happy.

Eddie: I hate my life mom, I hate it every single day!

Sylvia Guerrero: Don't say that.

Eddie: There's something wrong with me!

Sylvia Guerrero: There is nothing wrong with you!

Eddie: You see? You, I can't explain it no matter how hard I try it's
like everybody knows so I'm not gonna hide it anymore just to be
what you want to make me!

	[walks out of the room]

Sylvia Guerrero: [catches Eddie before walking down the hallway] It's
not what I want to make you. God made you!

Eddie: If God made me then Gods a sadist.

	[walks away]
