Description: The many bands Basie led over the decades were unique yet
consistently superb. This recording is a musical survey of the bands he
fronted in 1963, 1969, and 1970 respectively, the mid-to-late period of the
legendary swing pianist's career. Essentially a 'Greatest Hits' collection,
this Compact Jazz release includes some of the great Basie favorites and bands
of the period such as 'The Lady Is a Tramp', and 'I've Got the World on a
String'. And boy, do these bands swing!

The brass punches through the rhythm section like a prizefighter's left hook
to the jaw. Sheets of sound jump out of the music, adding contrast to an
otherwise relaxed and casual rhythm section. Basie's trademark was using
dynamic contrast to add excitement to the music, and here each band sounds
like it's playing as one person; that kind of ensemble tightness was a feat
only the Basie bands could truly boast.
