Description: Indisputably one of jazz's all-time greatest vocalists, Sarah
Vaughan recorded for numerous labels, within different genres, and with a wide
variety of accompaniment over her 40-plus year career. During her tenure at
Columbia between 1949 and 1953, Vaughan was clearly being groomed (in both
choice of material and the use of studio orchestras) for mainstream commercial
success. This two-disc set collects 28 sides from this pivotal period, each of
which bear the Divine One's inimitable stamp.
Jazz purists with an aversion to the kind of commercialized orchestral
arrangements heard here may wish to start with Vaughan's more straightforward
jazz dates on Mercury in the mid-'50s. The bottom line, however, is Vaughan's
voice, heard here in its prime: rich and fluid, with a velvet-smooth timbre.
Her stylish embellishments, rhythmic facility, and emotional intensity are all
in ample evidence, and, even on traditional ballads, Vaughan brings a spark of
adventurous, improvisatory energy to the proceedings. The track list comprises
well-known standards, including 'Nice Work If You Can Get It', 'I Cried for
You', 'Summertime', 'Ain't Misbehavin'', and 'Street of Dreams', among others.
This collection is a fine sampler of Vaughan's early work.
